Second Time Around
1 Thess 4:15-17
15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
I was listening to my college radio station (FAMU’s WAMN 90.5 on the Internet…yes, it’s a shameless plug) and after the morning gospel and jazz is old school music. I had walked away from my desk and when I returned, Shalamar’s song “Second Time Around” was playing. That song brought back memories of listening to my uncle’s records and dancing in my uncle’s bedroom. There was one particular part of the song where Howard Hewitt and Jody Whatley exchanges lines back in forth, saying “not like the first time” and then Hewitt ends it with his falsetto saying “talkin’ ’bout the second time”. When I heard this part of the song IMMEDIATELY my mind fell on this scripture (you can get a word from anything).
The first time Jesus came to the world, it (the world) did not receive Him. There were a few that believed in Him and He had done many things while on Earth and gave proof that He was the Son of God. But because He didn’t come here like others had thought a king should or even when He made His claim, not take up and fight for the kingdom as they thought He should, many were turned away. Pride, selfishness, jealousy, hypocrisy, envy, etc., all played a part in the slaying of the Master but He told them He would be back; but the second time around would be something different.
The next time He comes, we will see Him in His glory. Men that have mocked His name and laughed at every Christian follower, men that have said “there is no God”, men that have said “forget Jesus” will see Him again. Not like the first time where men where able to put their hands on Him, not like the first time when people spat on Him, not like the first time when religious leaders sold his life for 30 pieces of silver…talking ’bout the second time. When He returns this time every knee shall bow and confess that He is Lord. Get it right the first time on this Earth, if not, the second time you will have Hell to pay.
