Holding On To Dead Things
Mark 10:19-22 (NASB)
19 You know the commandments, ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’”
20 And he said to Him, “Teacher, I have kept all these things from my youth up.”
21 Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and said to him, “One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”
22 But at these words he was saddened, and he went away grieving, for he was one who owned much property.
Things that can’t do you any good. Things that have run their course and now…are dead. Things that can be weight that we really don’t need. Things that can hold us back from making it in the kingdom. Now…most of you would probably agree with every statement except the last one. How can dead things keep me from seeing Heaven you ask…well, I’m glad you asked. Some of us have been walking around with dead things and didn’t realize they were dead.
In the scripture today, we have a young fella that wanted to know about eternal life and how it can be obtained. Jesus asked did he “know the commandments”; “know’ coming from the Greek word “oida” meaning “to have an understanding of”. This young man understood and had been taught the commandments just as many of us. He knew that this he was on the right road and wanted to go further, just like many of us. But then Jesus said, you now have to do one thing…give up you things and follow me (v21). THIS thing was the separation of eternal life and the young man because he didn’t want to let go of his things…just like many of us.
Can you see the young man in all of us…at one point in time, not wanting to let the dead things go? Well, what do I mean by dead things…let me tell you. How many people will take their possession with them to the grave? The possessions you have, money you have, property you own, etc., is WORTHLESS in Heaven…or Hell. They are dead…but they are running and ruining your life. Notice what Jesus said in the end of verse 21. He said “(in reference to the man’s things) you will have treasure in heaven”. All he (the young man) had to do is give up the dead things for eternal things (someone just caught that). Give up what you have, He has things that are so much better.
